Hotels & Motels in Charlottetown
Enjoy the east coast experience in Charlottetown, the capital city and largest municipality in Prince Edward Island. But don’t get hung up on the term “largest"—Charlottetown is anything but, offering the conveniences of a city with a charming small town vibe.
Located on the waterfront in the exact middle of the island, Charlottetown is an ideal focal point for tourists exploring the red sands and quaint fishing villages of this famous island. Staying in hotels and motels here offers a central location that is easily connected to the rest of the island, while still maintaining a vibrant city buzz that consists of cultural attractions, unique shops and energetic restaurants and bars.
ORIENTATION
Anyone travelling to PEI will likely come across Charlottetown on their travels—it’s the main transportation hub with an airport that serves many major Canadian cities. The Trans Canada Highway, which connects the island to Mainland Canada, also passes through Charlottetown.
OLDE CHARLOTTETOWN
Old Charlottetown is the obvious place to stay for visitors to Charlottetown, particularly if they’re keen to experience true East Coast history and hospitality, and the Rodd Hotel on Kent Street is an ideal location to celebrate this history. Built in 1931 by CN Railways, this grand hotel is not just one of Charlottetown’s oldest hotels, it’s also arguably its grandest, both inside and out. With stunning marble floors, impressive pillars and high vaulted ceilings, the Rodd provides 115 elegant rooms and a unique rooftop garden to enjoy views of the waterfront from.
A few blocks away near the Confederation Centre for the Arts and the Province House National Historic Site is the Great George, a historic award-winning boutique hotel that encompasses 15 heritage buildings and 60 plush suites, each of which is completely unique. The Great George originally opened in 1846 as the Regent Hotel and was completely restored to its current grandeur in the 1990s.
The Rodd and the Great George are two examples of luxury accommodations in Olde Charlottetown, but that’s not to say that bargain hunters and budget travellers can’t find historic lodging too—downtown Charlottetown is known for its wide array of charming inns and B and Bs that offer the same experience and great location at a more affordable price. There are also a handful of backpacker-style hostels for more hard core travellers.
FARTHER AFIELD
That’s not to say that downtown is the only place to stay in Charlottetown. The North end of the city offers the convenience of being close to both the Trans Canada Highway and the airport, and it’s also not as pricey. Capital Drive, next to the Charlottetown Mall, is a prime location for large chain hotels, as well as the popular Banbridge Inn, a charming hotel with a lush on-site garden. They offer affordable rates as well as long-term stay discounts. Another option is the nearby Royalty Maples, where both motel and cottage-style accommodations are available. The Royal Maples is kid-friendly, with a playground and beach volleyball court on site. It’s also conveniently located literally across the street from the mall.
